What is Learning Journal?
Learning Journal is a reflective journalling tool for Canvas and Moodle.
Instructors set structured journal tasks, students reflect and track their learning over time, and instructors close the feedback loop, all inside the LMS.
Why use it
- Prompt-driven entries build reflective habits.
- It sits inside Canvas and Moodle, so there's no separate login.
- Task templates support tables, prompts and rich text formatting.
- Student entries are private by default, and students can export them.
- Instructors can review entries, give feedback and, if you choose, link journals to grading.
- It works for formative and summative assessment.
Who it's for
- Instructors and facilitators design prompts, review entries and support reflective practice.
- Students respond to prompts, build a reflective portfolio and engage personally with the material.
- Learning designers and LMS administrators set it up and tailor it.
How it works
Instructors create journal tasks, on their own or embedded in course content. Students respond in the LMS and save entries privately, or submit them as assessments where that's turned on. Instructors review entries, give feedback and track engagement over time.
Where it's available
- Canvas LMS, through an LTI integration
- Moodle, as an external tool
